Exploring involves examining the current attitudes, beliefs, concerns and practices related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Goals and vision are then set, with transformational leaders supporting the ability to imagine a different way of being and schooling.

This involves the surfacing of attitudes, beliefs & concerns, effecting a change of attitude, and creating a culture that values diversity and the contributions of all community members.

This step can include several elements:

1. Preparing the ground

  •  Who: Defining your team
  • What: What is this all about
  • Why: What is the underlying reason for change?

2. Towards a shared understanding

  • Understanding: Explore the concept of inclusive communities at different levels to gain a shared understanding
  • Status Quo: How inclusive is our school at the moment?
  • Ambition: Where do we want to be?

3. Getting inspiration

For defining ambitions, it can be helpful to study inspiring examples from other schools, to make  the idea of inclusive communities more clear and concrete. A number of such inspiring examples have been collected and can be a starting point to define shared ambitions.
